چکیده

We study whether hierarchical galaxy formation in a concordance ΛCDM universe can produce enough massive and red galaxies compared to the observations. We implement a semi-analytical model in which the central black holes gain their mass during major mergers of galaxies and the energy feedback from active galaxy nuclei (AGN) suppresses the gas cooling in their host halos. The energy feedback from AGN acts effectively only in massive galaxies when su-permassive black holes have been formed in the central bulges. Compared with previous models without black hole formation, our model predicts more massive and luminous galaxies at high redshift, agreeing with the observations of K20 up to z ∼ 3. Also the predicted stellar mass density from massive galaxies agrees with the observations of GDDS. Because of the energy feedback from AGN, the formation of new stars is stopped in massive galaxies with the termination of gas cooling and these galaxies soon become red with color R − K >5 (Vega magnitude) , comparable to the Extremely Red Objects (EROs) observed at redshift z ∼1-2. Still the predicted number density of very EROs is lower than observed at z ∼ 2, and it may be related to inadequate descriptions of dust extinction, star formation history and AGN feedback in those luminous galaxies.

Ja n 20 06 Massive and Red Objects predicted by the semianalytical model of galaxy formation

We study whether hierarchical galaxy formation in a concordance ΛCDM universe can produce enough massive and red galaxies compared with the observations. Recent observations suggest appreciable star formation activity in early-type galaxies down to redshift z ∼ 0.5. If so, there is likely to be dust in these galaxies. We consider the possibility that obscuration by dust can reconcile the observed frequency of gravitational lensing of quasar images with the considerably larger rate predicted in a low density cosmologically flat universe dominated...

Massive, red galaxies in a hierarchical universe – II. Clustering of Extremely Red Objects

We present predictions for the clustering of Extremely Red Objects (EROs) in a cold dark matter universe, using a semi-analytical galaxy formation model in combination with a cosmological N-body simulation. EROs are red, massive galaxies observed at 0.7 z 3, and their numbers and properties have posed a challenge to hierarchical galaxy formation models. We analyse the halo occupation distributi...

We have carried out a search of Lyman α candidates over a field of 1200 ⊓⊔ using the CFH12K camera at the CFHT and a custom medium band filter. The search has unconvered 150 candidates, corresponding to a source density of ∼0.13 ⊓⊔ . We find that our sources have red colors (B-I ∼ 2) which imply either that a large fraction of the light is highly reddened and we are detecting Lyman α through sp...

In order to explain the high-redshift supernovae Ia observations together with the recently made precise observations of the CMB anisotropy by WMAP, the standard big bang cosmology has to invoke some hypothetical matter with unnatural properties which is very speculative. This casts doubts upon the foundations of the standard cosmology and suggests that some theoretical concept may still be mis...
